About Karlien Francois
Karlien François graduated as medical doctor in 2007 and as nephrologist in 2013 at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium. She then completed her training with a Clinical Home Dialysis Fellowship at University Health Network, Toronto, Canada, during which she was mentored by Joanne Bargman, Janita Vassal and Christopher Chan.
Karlien François works as a clinical nephrologist and clinician-researcher at Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel since the end of 2014. Under her leadership, the nephrology department of Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel became a Belgian reference centre for peritoneal dialysis. She supervises medical students and junior doctors during their clinical and scientific training.
Karlien François received research grants from the Research Foundation Flanders and the Scientific Fund Willy Gepts and completed her doctoral thesis on coagulation activation during hemodialysis. She is principal investigator of several academic and commercial clinical trials within the field of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
Prof. dr. Karlien François is a member of the Belgian, European and International Society of Nephrology, the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis and the European PD Leadership Initiative.
